Placement Testing
Placement Test Resources
Placement testing helps us ensure every student is appropriately challenged and successful at the right grade level. Tests are not entrance exams. Students applying for grades 1 through 11 complete a placement test, and kindergartners are not required to test.
The study guides below give prospective students and their families an idea of our grade benchmarks. It is helpful for your child to be familiar with the topics outlined.

Frequently Asked Questions
What grade should I sign up for testing?
Please sign up for the grade your child will rise into for the upcoming school year. The topics for the rising grade are what their current Vanguard peers have reviewed. Kindergartners are not required to take a placement test.
What subjects are covered on the test?
Reading, writing, and math.
What do we need to bring?
We provide the pencils and scratch paper your child will need for the test.
Only applicants for grades 10 and 11 need to bring a copy of their current transcript to the placement test appointment.
Can my child use a calculator?
No calculators or any other types of study aids are allowed.
How soon will we hear back?
It can take up to two weeks for the Test Review Committee to reach out to families with an electronic notification of your grade placement.
May we take the test again?
Yes. There is a maximum of three retests, with a minimum of four weeks of review before another can be scheduled.
